Leslie Heywood is a leading scholar of postmodern feminist thought, specializing
in sport studies, body culture, and women's physical activity. She is currently
the Executive Director & Developer of the Nell Jackson Center for the
Study of Female Athletes, and has served on the board of the Women's Sports
Foundation. Her monograph Pretty Good for a Girl (paperback edition,
University of Minnesota Press, 1999) received critical praise for shedding
light on growing up enmeshed in girl's sporting culture. She is currently
working on a new book on women's sports, girl culture, and American culture
titled Built To Win: The Rise of the Female Athlete as Cultural Icon
